Gas chromatography (GC) is an analytical technique used to separate and analyze volatile compounds in a sample. It involves the vaporization of the sample and its injection into a chromatographic column, which contains a stationary phase. The separation occurs based on the differential interactions between the sample components and the stationary phase, as well as the mobile phase, which is typically an inert gas.

In gas chromatography, the sample is introduced into the column, and as it passes through, the different compounds in the sample interact differently with the stationary phase. These interactions cause the compounds to have varying retention times, leading to their separation. The separated components then exit the column and are detected by a detector.

One of the commonly used detectors in gas chromatography is mass spectrometry (MS). Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique that involves the ionization of compounds and their subsequent separation based on their mass-to-charge ratio. By coupling gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the separated compounds can be further analyzed and identified based on their mass spectra, which provide unique fingerprint information for each compound.

In GC-MS, as the compounds elute from the gas chromatography column, they enter the mass spectrometer, where they are ionized and fragmented. The resulting ions are then separated based on their mass-to-charge ratio and detected, generating a mass spectrum for each compound. By comparing the obtained mass spectra with reference spectra in databases, the compounds can be identified.

Gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry offers high sensitivity, selectivity, and the ability to identify and quantify a wide range of volatile compounds in complex samples.

Gas chromatography is widely used in various fields for its ability to separate, identify, and quantify volatile and semi-volatile compounds and finds applications in various fields such as environmental analysis, forensic science, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage testing, and more. GC (gas chromatography) is an essential tool in scientific research, quality control, and regulatory compliance in numerous industries.
